Strategy One
Defend Core Institutions of Democracy
Today, America faces a broad-scale assault on our core institutions of democracy. We invest to defend against actors that seek to destabilize, discredit, or destroy these institutions, and to support action that strengthens them.
The THREAT
A democracy only stands if its core institutions are secure, trusted, and not subjugated to one party or person. No institution is more foundational to democracy than free, fair, nonviolent elections. In recent years, relentless attacks on our election system have eroded trust, stoked violence, and violated the Constitution. While unprecedented here, these threats are not new globally: authoritarian movements throughout history have followed a similar playbook.
The Historical Authoritarian Playbook:
- Centralize executive control
- Politicize independent institutions
- Overhaul the justice system
- Replace objective referees with partisan actors
- Spread disinformation
- Discredit and quash dissent
- Reject the peaceful transfer of power
